If you have been feeling stuck in your traumas, anxieties, or depression, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may be what you have been looking for. KAP synergizes ketamine and psychotherapy to help you have the breakthrough you have been desiring.
Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) describes Ketamine as an arylcyclohexylamine, the same class of drugs as dextromethorphan (DXM, ‘robo’) and phencyclidine (PCP, ‘angel dust’) It was invented in 1962 by the pharmacist, Calvin Stevens, and patented in 1966 by Parke-Davis for use as an anesthetic in humans and animals. It is a neurotransmitter antagonist that blocks excitatory glutamate from reaching the Nmethyl- D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. It affects primarily the hippocampal formation (responsible for memory) and the prefrontal cortex (responsible for abstract thought), explaining its profound effects on both. Ketamine reduces brain inflammation which promotes the healing of damaged nerve connections in the brain (where anxiety can live), and causes positive changes in brain chemistry.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), involves combining talk therapy and Ketamine. When dosed properly, Ketamine allows the patient to face their traumatic experiences head-on, without less fear or stress. This allows the clients, under the guidance of a guide, to process and move past these traumatic blockages. Multiple studies have demonstrated that psychotherapy prolongs the improvement achieved by Ketamine therapy, as well as the degree of symptom reduction in patients with mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and PTSD (keep scrolling down to see more of the research about this).
KAP is an excellent choice for people that have treatment- resistant mental health conditions like: depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. It offers hope that healing is possible when other treatments are not working. Ketamine offers a 75% success rate in comparison to Prozac, which has a 12% success rate. KAP is also ideal for people who don’t want to take medication daily or have struggled with side effects from medication. For people already taking medication it may be possible to reduce or eliminate some of your current medication.
Despite the success rate with ketamine, it is not for everyone. There a few medical contraindications to Ketamine that may make you a bad candidate for KAP. This includes active substance abuse, taking benzodiazepines daily, heart arrhythmias, history of heart attack or stroke, history of seizures, glaucoma, poorly controlled hypertension, history of psychosis, primary personality disorder, severe or poorly controlled asthma or other breathing disorder, poorly controlled urinary retention, and pregnancy (or breastfeeding). Contact me today to see if you would be a good candidate for KAP.
In 2019, a large study published in the National Library of Medicine reported that using Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy created a significant decrease in depression and anxiety. This study's findings are important because it shows that ketamine alone is great but combing it with psychotherapy promotes even more results in decreasing symptoms of depression.
Additionally, since ketamine creates a dissociative experience that can be disorienting, having a trusted guide next to you can make the experience more soothing, while also taking the opportunity to generate new insights into your depression, trauma, or anxiety.
Carlos Zarate Jr., MD, of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recently injected 18 patients who had treatment resistant depression with ketamine and found that their depression significantly improved within hours – an improvement that lasted for up to a week after a single dose.
This phase consists of medical intake, assessment, education, treatment goals, and setting a loose intention for the Ketamine experience.
There will be 4 to 6 prep session. They will be 50-minute sessions that will cost $150/ session
This phase is when Ketamine-is administered. You will be connected to a psychiatrist that will prescribe the Ketamine for you to bring into the session.
These sessions will be 3 hours long. I recommend a minimum of 3 sessions (6 sessions is recommended for the best results). The investment is $500/ session.
This phase helps to reinforce the healing process. This can be done through talk therapy, EMDR, meditation, yoga, body movement, and more.
The number of these sessions will vary based on client's needs. I would recommend a minimum of 4 integration sessions that will be 50-minutes. Costing $150/ session
Ketamine is shown to help increase stable and positive psychological changes, promotes personality growth and self-cognition, change of view of one’s self and the world around, help to broaden of spiritual horizons, harmonization of a person’s relationships with the world and with other people.
